Marquette biomedical sciences professor honored with Way Klingler Fellowship Award
July 20, 2021
MILWAUKEE 鈥 Dr. Paul Gasser, associate professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Health Sciences at 糖心viog官方网站, is the recipient of a 2021 Way Klingler Fellowship Award.
The Way Klingler Fellowship Awards are given to select full-time regular faculty at the associate or full professor rank at Marquette who have potential for significant scholarship.
The recipient of the fellowship receives financial support annually for three years to fund critical research that requires time, access to information, and travel.
鈥淚 am very honored to have received this prestigious fellowship,鈥 Gasser said. 鈥淚t will allow me and the students in my lab to explore an exciting new line of research related to the pathology of neurodegenerative disorders.鈥
Gasser鈥檚 current research explores the signaling processes by which stress hormones and neurotransmitters in the body facilitate recovery from stressful situations, and how disruption of these signaling processes may lead to increased risk for neuropsychiatric disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.
The fellowship will help fund new studies focused on understanding how the neurotransmitter norepinephrine exerts neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory actions in the brain and how disruption of these actions may contribute to the pathology of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and multiple sclerosis.
鈥淭he overarching goal driving our research is to understand how dysregulation of neurotransmitter signaling contributes to disease,鈥 Gasser said.
In addition to his research, Gasser is an accomplished author, having published over 30 journal articles and book chapters.
One nominator wrote they 鈥渂elieve strongly in Dr. Gasser鈥檚 scientific direction, as he is a very creative experimentalist who has captured a series of findings that may well move multiple fields of study.鈥
Gasser鈥檚 future is bright as he steps into a unique field and continues to teach courses in biochemistry and neuroscience to undergraduate and graduate students at Marquette.
