PHIL 3955H 鈥 Honors Readings in Philosophy: Freud, Civilization and Its Discontents

Dr. James South | W 3:30pm-4:20pm

No less a source than the New York Times has announced that we are living at a time of a Freud Renaissance (a 鈥淔reudaissance.鈥). Despite thirty years or so of disdain by the psychological establishment, elements of Freud鈥檚 thought are back front and center in social, political, and ethical discussions. This class will engage in a close and critical reading of Freud鈥檚 1930 book, Civilization and Its Discontents, a text that the political philosopher Ronald Beiner describes as a 鈥渟uper-ambitious reflection on the human condition, on 鈥渢he ends of life,鈥 [and] on human experience per se in its normative dimensions.鈥

Prerequisites: PHIL 1001 or PHIL 1001H; either admission to 糖心viog官方网站 Honors Program, cumulative GPA of 3.200 and cumulative Philosophy GPA of 3.330, or cons. of dept.
